Knives have played a large role in my life. Being an avid outdoors person fishing the Lower Mainland and hunting the Northern British Columbia. I have spent nearly all my life fishing for salmon on the Fraser River, whether it was for my own pleasure or guiding.
In the past I pursued taxidermy, mounting a large number of trophies from mice to full body goat mounts. Through my fishing and taxidermy experiences I have used many different knives, never quite finding what I wanted.
Making knives started as a hobby, which was satisfying my own needs. I enjoyed it so much I continued to make them for my family, always striving to improve the quality. I displayed my knives to various friends who were excited about what they seen and asked how much I charged? At first I was only proud of what I made and had no intention of selling my knives until my friends & family showed such a huge interest. From then on my hobby excelled to a business making it difficult to keep an inventory of my custom built knives.
I build many different types of knives for the outdoors person or for kitchen use; the majority being fillet knives. I take great pride in that my knives are made with very little use of machinery, completing much of the process by hand. All my bevels are ground with a hand file. I enjoy this “old school” approach because I feel sculpting by hand is truly a “custom knife.” I was self-taught and therefore developed many of my own techniques. All hardening and tempering is completed by myself.
I prefer using natural stabilized wood with unique grain or patterns as this assures a higher quality knife. The handle material which I use on my knives is from a local supplier that produces a very high quality product. All of my stabilized wood is purchased from woodstabilizer.com
I file work each of the spines of my knives, adding a custom appeal to them, as well as a polished finish. My handle design is noticeably comfortable and assures a very safe and secure grip; ergonomically designed. The blades of my knives are made from 440C, ATS 34 or CPM 154 steel.
All my knives include a handcrafted, unique look leather sheath, sewn by my own hands. Also, some years back my Dad was diagnosed with an incurable cancer and he succumbed to this awful disease. So, for each sale of a knife $25 will be donated towards cancer research. Being an avid road cyclist these donations will be applied towards the minimum donation requirements to participate within cancer research rides; such as, the Ride2Survive, The Ride to Conquer Cancer or the LiveStrong Foundation Ride.
Looking forward I would like to increase my sales so that I may pursue a full time career/business of custom knife making.
